Program Outline

Program Modules

Module 1 — Unreal XR Setup

  • OpenXR plugin configuration and input mapping
  • Project settings for VR: instanced stereo, forward shading
  • Device emulation in editor

Module 2 — Interaction Systems

  • VR Expansion Plugin vs native XR interaction
  • Physics-based grabbing and throwing
  • Haptic feedback design

Module 3 — Visual Quality vs Performance

  • Lumen vs baked lighting for standalone VR
  • Nanite restrictions on mobile GPU architectures
  • Scalability groups and runtime quality switching

Module 4 — Platform Deployment

  • Packaging for SteamVR and Meta Quest from one project
  • Android SDK configuration for Unreal
  • Debugging on-device with Unreal Insights

Capstone

A fully playable VR level submitted with a performance report comparing metrics across two target platforms.

Practical skills you can apply the moment the session ends.

Unreal Engine 5 offers rendering capabilities that Unity currently does not match at the high end, but its XR tooling is less mature and its cross-platform story requires more manual configuration. This course is honest about both sides.

Students work with OpenXR via Unreal's built-in plugin, Lumen (where hardware permits), and Nanite with explicit fallbacks for mobile-class hardware. The program covers Blueprints for rapid prototyping and C++ for performance-critical interaction systems.

A recurring theme throughout the course is the tension between visual ambition and hardware constraints. Participants build a VR environment twice: once targeting a high-end PC headset, and once adapted for Meta Quest 3 with the same gameplay intact.

Instructors include developers with shipping credits on commercial VR titles released through Steam and the Meta store. Feedback is specific and grounded in production experience rather than theoretical best practices.
